A cloud migration is as much about planning as it is about moving servers. This checklist helps you reduce risk and avoid surprises.
Before the migration
- Inventory: list applications, servers, databases, integrations and scheduled jobs.
- Dependencies: map which systems depend on each other.
- Goals: agree why you are migrating, for example reliability, scalability, cost or retiring old hardware.
- Approach per application: rehost as-is, re-platform with small changes, or refactor.
- Target architecture: networking, security, environments and backup design.
- Budget: estimate running costs and set billing alerts.
Preparation
- Set up accounts, access control and networking in the target cloud
- Build infrastructure in a repeatable way, ideally as code
- Plan data migration and how to keep data in sync during cutover
- Prepare a rollback plan for each step
- Define success criteria and test cases
Testing
- Migrate a non-critical application first
- Run functional, performance and security tests
- Test backups and restores in the new environment
- Confirm monitoring and alerting work before go-live
Cutover
- Communicate the migration window to users
- Freeze changes during cutover
- Migrate data, switch DNS or traffic, and validate
- Keep the old environment available until the new one is stable
After the migration
- Monitor closely for the first few weeks
- Review performance and right-size resources
- Decommission old infrastructure securely
- Update documentation and support runbooks
Migrations go smoothly when they are done in stages, tested thoroughly and supported by a clear rollback plan.
